Come follow Me . .

Luke 9:59-60

He said to another person, “Come, follow me.”  The man agreed but he said, Lord first let me return home and bury my father.  But Jesus told him, Let the spiritually dead bury their own spiritually dead.  Your duty is to go and preach about the Kingdom of God.

So in reading this, does it seems like maybe Jesus was being mean to this man and not letting him go home to bury his dead father before following Him? Not really. Doubtful in fact that the father was even dead. The man was telling Jesus that he was not ready to follow Him. That the time wasn’t right, he needed to wrap up his personal life, wait till his father died, etc. etc. When Jesus calls us to follow Him we need to make sure we don’t make the same mistake as the man. When we are called of Christ we need to step up and take our place in the Kingdom of God to speak to others about Him. The bible tells us to take up our cross daily in that as Christ was crucified so were we. We are crucified to our sin and buried and made alive by the blood Christ shed for us.
