(A repeat of an earlier reading – we remember and give thanks today for what He did for us by going to the cross in our place!)
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until 3:00. At that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, rocks split apart and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people.
The day that Jesus died four miraculous events happened. Complete darkness fell over the land for three hours in the middle of the day. This was verified not only in biblical writing but also by other historians of the day. In the temple separating the Holy Place where priests could enter and the Most Holy Place where only the high priest could enter only once per year to atone for the sins of the nation was a curtain or a veil. This veil was of great proportion and thickness. This veil was torn in two from top to bottom almost as if the temple was mourning Jesus’ death. An earthquake was felt across the land and the rocks split apart. The splitting of the rocks is described as almost something supernatural looking. All nature mourned the day that “true love died”. The bodies of the dead rose from the grave. When Jesus ascended to heaven it showed His victory over sin, Satan, death, and the grave.
