I often times share this verse with somebody who has just had a loved one pass away. Now that their loved ones are no longer in their body – they are present with the Lord. Our bodies are temporal – earthen vessels or houses as this verse speaks of. Because it is from the earth, it will return to the earth. The soul is a building from God and will continue forever in the world to come. God has formed us for immortality and while our soul is housed in the earthly tabernacle (body) we are absent from the glorious presence of the Lord. While in our earthly bodies we are absent from the Father’s house. We can share the apostle Paul’s hope and confidence of eternal life with Christ. I share it today in memory of my beloved Aunt Dorothy who passed into the presence of the Lord last night.
2 Corinthians 5:1,6
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord.
