Deuteronomy 6:1-9

These words which I command you today shall be in your heart. Deuteronomy 6:6

Are you a list maker? Most people at least jot down their grocery items on a piece of paper before heading to the store. It’s so easy to forget the little details that we need to keep checklists to help us remember.

We’re just as “forgetful” concerning God’s Word many times too. The Lord understands our natural weaknesses and our tendency to mentally push aside thoughts we don’t deem urgent at the moment. That is why He commanded His people to keep His words ever before them:

“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates” (Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NASB).

In other words, they were to put God’s Word in the paths of their daily lives, everywhere they went, and as a part of all they did. How can you do the same today? Find some verses that pertain to your personal circumstances, and write them out on cards. Keep the cards with you or in a prominent place in your home. You’ll be surprised how quickly they become a part of your everyday thinking.

Write Your Word on my heart, O Lord, and teach me to cherish it.
