Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:5
Many scholars believe Nicodemus eventually became a secret follower of Jesus, while a few cite a lack of evidence concerning his conversion. Considering the consequence, Nicodemus took a huge risk in coming to Jesus that evening. Had his peers found out, he could have faced banishment from the Sanhedrin.
Each time Nicodemus heard Jesus speak, the message pointed in one direction: The kingdom of God was now among them. But how could that be? And if it was, how did one gain access?
Jesus’ answer was baffling: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of god” (John 3:5 NASB). Christ was speaking of a spiritual rebirth, something Nicodemus never heard before.
There is only one way to enter the kingdom of God, and that is through faith in His Son and the finished work of the Cross. We know Nicodemus took a critical look at his faith because the next time he is mentioned, he was preparing the Lord’s body for burial.
Only one thing could move a man to join in such an effort, and that is the love of God. Have you taken a critical look at your faith? Is Jesus the central focus of your life? Anything less demands a closer look.
Jesus, You are the central focus of my life. Thank You for the finished work of the Cross.
