THE FOUNDATION OF OUR SECURITY

1 Peter 1:18-21

Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers. 1 Peter 1:18

A favorite hymn goes like this:

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.

(Edward Mote and William Bradbury, “The Solid Rock.”)

What is the foundation of your security? Is it Jesus Christ or something else? If your hope, life, desires, dreams, ambitions, or affections are set on anything but God’s Son, then you are not standing. Instead, you are caught—trapped—in sinking sand.

Countless Christians come to know Christ as their Savior, but they never transfer ownership rights from themselves to Him. The apostle Paul is a perfect example of a radical change (Acts 9). A short time before meeting Jesus on the Damascus road, he had been a willing and instrumental participant in Stephen’s death (Acts 7). Paul never forgot what Jesus did for him, and he never returned to his old lifestyle. He found what he had been looking for. Have you?

Lord, I stand upon the solid Rock, Christ Jesus. All other ground is sinking sand. I rest on Your unchanging grace, knowing my anchor holds in every storm.
