1 Samuel 16:1-13

But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Image is everything. We need just the right tie for that upcoming job interview. We need to shed just a few more pounds for the class reunion. If we desire to get ahead, our presentation is critical. But is image really as critical as we’re lead to believe?

David was the last member of his family anyone would have picked as one of Israel’s most influential men, so it was unthinkable that he be chosen king. What did God see him? The key word is “heart.” God didn’t look at his outfit, hair, shoes, or even his award-winning smile. God saw David’s heart, and that was the thing David spent time refining.

Do you know some people with good hearts? Take a little time to affirm them and to thank God for them.

Lord, remind me each day to spend as much time on cultivating a Christlike heart as I spend on my outward appearance.
